Topic: Safety vs. Low Cost in Mobile Robotics
Mobile robotics is currently transforming industry and everyday life around the world. The spectrum ranges from traditional driverless transport systems and autonomous drones to humanoid robots. At the same time, international safety standards vary considerably in some cases, as global standards have so far been harmonised only to a limited extent. Europe continues to be regarded as the region with the strictest safety requirements.
But how will the European safety culture develop under increasing competitive pressure from the US and Asia? Can Europe maintain its innovative and competitive edge despite high regulatory requirements? And what impact will this have on European standards and on the interpretation of the Machinery Directive? Last but not least, the question arises as to whether the high standards for safety measures and labelling will remain economically viable in the long term.
