Mobile thoughts: Names are smoke and mirrors
Modern mobile robots seem to be able to do everything. Thanks to advanced technology, in particular highly developed sensor technology and AI-based control systems, it is now theoretically possible to use robots in almost all areas.
At least that is the widespread opinion. In practice, however, especially in serious automation projects with clear requirements for the throughput of an AGV system, a differentiated approach is required. Here, the AGV (automated guided vehicle system) should be understood as an organisational instrument whose success depends largely on adapted framework conditions.
In this context, I would like to put forward the following theses for discussion:
- Beware of exaggerated flexibility requirements! Remain realistic and set clear priorities.
- Automation is not a one-way street! It is not only the supplier who delivers – the operator must also actively create the conditions that enable successful automation.
- Throughput is crucial!
